Isla Mujeres overview

If you take a 25 minute express ferry ride from Puerto Juaraz in Cancun you’re dream vacation can become a reality. Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is located just 8 miles across the Bahia de Mujeres & as it is only 5 miles long & half a mile wide time passes so slowly that it really is a dream come true. Even though it has been discovered by tourists it maintains its own charm and tranquil atmosphere as family life and tourism melt into one. This is evident as you wander around the streets where carribean style houses nestle in between shops and restaurants. As you sit in one of the many beachfront bars and restaurants enjoying a traditional ‘sundowner’ you can watch the local fisherman mending their nets or preparing their boats for the next mornings fishing trip to catch Lobsters, prawns, octopus and Grouper to name but a few which will more than likely end up on your dinner table that same day.
Getting around is very easy, the local red taxis are everywhere and so cheap, but if you wish to be more independent you can hire bikes or the very popular golf carts and for the more energetic you can of course walk! The local currency is either American dollar or the Pesos which makes it very very reasonable against our GB Pound.
There is plenty to do on the Island apart from the obligatory sun worshipping on one of the gorgeous white sandy beaches and swimming in the warm-yes it is warm-turquoise blue sea.. You can visit the Turtle Farm: Giant sea turtles lay their eggs
in the sand between May and September and because they are federally protected the eggs are placed in enclosed pens away from predators. The newly hatched turtles are then placed in tanks where they are looked after until they are released back into the wild by the local children. For the more adventurous you can swim with Dolphins, Sharks and Manterays. Visit the natural reef park to snorkel and scuba dive. Do a carribean bungee jump or zipline. For a bit of culture there are the Mayan ruins and lighthouse, Hacienda Mundaca which was built by a local pirate. Of course if you want to leave the Island for a while they are plenty of excursions to do on the mainland i.e. Chichen Itza the famous Mayan ruins.
There is accommodation for all budgets and tastes. Colourful hostels up to the 5*luxury hotels. Of course you can always stay in Cancun or the smaller Playa Del Carmen and travel over for daytrips or even a two-centre holiday where you will experience the best of both worlds.
So if you are after a chill-out get away from it all then there is no better place than here, but don’t just take my word for it try it. I certainly will be again.
